GrInHy2.0 officially started

07.01.2019 | GrInHy2.0

With the start of GrInHy2.0 on January 1, the Salzgitter AG and Sunfire GmbH continue their successful collaboration since the launch of the predecessor project GrInHy in March 2016. The project consortium is completed with Paul Wurth S.A. and Tenova, two technology provider for the steel industry, and the French research centre CEA.

In GrInHy2.0, the first steam electrolyser of the Megawatt class will be manufactured and implemented in the industrial environment of SZFG's integrated iron-and-steel works. By the end of 2022, the plant will have been in operation for at least 13,000 hours and have delivered a total of around 100 metric tons (equivalent to one million standard cubic meters) of green hydrogen. The hydrogen with its 3.8 quality (99.98 % hydrogen) will be used for annealing processes in the integrated steel mill and will replace the hydrogen typically produced from fossil resources.

Besides the long-term system testing, GrInHy2.0 also contains the conducting of multi-year durability testing with stacks, the central elements of HTE technology. Furthermore, a technical and economic study will be carried out to accompany the decarburization of European steel industry through the conversion at a very low CO2, green-hydrogen-based steel production.
